MRR / Volokolamskoye avenue intersection traffic interchange reconstruction project

The Moscow Ring Road (MRR) will get another modern split-level interchange in 2021. Mostotrest PJSC will carry out a large-scale reconstruction of the existing interchange, built in the late 1950s. The project customer is the Moscow City Road and Bridge Construction Management Authority. Mostotrest has been awarded the contract as the sole bidder in the corresponding tender.

As part of the project, Mostotrest will rebuild Volokolamskoye Avenue, expanding the carriageway to up to 5 lanes in each direction, and the existing flyover at the intersection of Volokolamskoye Avenue with the Moscow Ring Road; build lateral passages on the outer and inner sides of the Moscow Ring Road, with an expansion of up to 3 lanes in each direction for turning traffic; build a two-lane U-turn flyover for left-turning, outer MRR bound traffic arriving along Volokolamskoye Avenue from the city centre, as well as for suburbs-bound traffic arriving from the inner side of the MRR, replacing the existing interchange; build at Level 3 a left-turn city centre bound exit from the outer side of the MRR onto Volokolamskoye Avenue, to accommodate turning traffic (instead of the existing traffic interchange exit). As part of the project, Mostotrest will build and rebuild a total of 3.4 km of sideways, 2.4 km of exits and 3 flyovers with a total length of 1.25 km. In addition, Mostotrest will rearrange backbone utility networks and relocate a number of engineered structures currently situated in the project construction area. The contract value is RUB6.009 billion (including VAT).

Construction will be carried out in the conditions of uninterrupted busy city traffic, in an area highly saturated with subsurface utility networks and in close proximity to railroads and a gas station.

The reconstruction of the traffic interchange at the intersection of Volokolamskoye Avenue with the Moscow Ring Road will be carried out as part of comprehensive reconstruction of the MRR, aimed at improving traffic conditions, and is part of the citywide road and bridge construction program in Moscow.

At present, the segment is saturated to its throughput limit. The existing traffic interchange is a cloverleaf type, resulting in interlacing traffic bottlenecks and congestion both on the MRR and on the intersecting Volokolamskoye and Pyatnitskoye avenues. In addition, the existing design parameters of Volokolamskoye Avenue in Moscow and the Moscow Region, with, respectively, 3 and 2 lanes in each direction, are no longer able to accommodate today's traffic. The new interchange design will significantly increase the transport hub throughput capacity.
